Ice cream, popsicles, slushies. A tall drink fixed over ice. Is there anything more refreshing on a hot day?
Growing up without central air just meant going to the swimming pool more often. Running errands with one of my parents as the sun shined relentlessly and your legs stuck to the car seats was tolerable if sipping a cherry coke slushie. Ice cream sundaes with grandpa? Yes, please.
The only drawback: eating too fast. That first icy jolt to the nerves on the fleshy ceiling of my mouth indicated dreaded brain freeze. What an ache.
As an adult a funny thing has happened. I don’t really experience brain freeze anymore. Perhaps it’s something to do with my chronic headaches and cold foods easing inflammation. In case that’s right, for science I’ve been consuming more frozen items and drinks with ice.
But then I discovered another drawback. Stockton hates the sound of ice in a glass.
”What if it’s in a plastic cup?“ I say as we drive to work, holding up my mango lemonade over ice in my tervis. “Does that make it less annoying?“
He considers it. “No, I don’t think so. I’ve always hated the sound of ice rattling around. There’s just something about it I can’t stand.”
Stockton isn’t a complainer, so when he tells me he doesn’t like something, it’s noteworthy. Plus, I’m not the kind of person who enjoys being irritating. I will figure out a workaround. Maybe straws. Maybe less ice. Maybe more Italian ice from the local shop in Mayberry. They do sell dozens of flavors like strawberry, chocolate, and key lime and they are open daily…
What’s your favorite frozen treat or drink? Tell me about it.
I have a couple of favorites. One is a frozen yogurt pie that Sandy makes. Yum.
Sounds like a good treat.
Cold drinks hurt my teeth nut have got used to chilled beer!
Ouch Bridget!
After my college semester in London, I got used to the beer served warmer and it definitely took my a bit to handle cold drinks again.
I favor snowballs. That’s what we call snowcones in my neck of the woods. My favorite flavor is chocolate with evaporated milk poured over the top. In my opinion that experience should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Decadent!
Oh, yes, it is! Mwahaha!
I have really gotten into Tim Horton’s Ice Capps. I grab one when I can but they do put on the calories. With the warm weather we have lately it means for longer walks to burn the calories for me.
Sounds like a great treat.
